The conference brought together representatives of the scientific community, public institutions, industry organizations, and sustainability experts to discuss the current state and prospects of the circular economy in Italy and across Europe. This economic model focuses on sustainable resource management, waste reduction, and extending product life cycles through the regeneration and reuse of materials.
Discussions centered on industrial transformation, resource security, and the implementation of innovative material reuse models. The event also featured the presentation of the 2026 8th Report on the Circular Economy in Italy, outlining key directions for the sector’s modernization.
Special attention was given to strategic priorities for the coming years, including efforts to help shape the future European Circular Economy Act, advance recycling technologies for critical raw materials, and implement “green water economy” solutions aimed at wastewater treatment and the recovery of secondary resources and energy. Discussions also focused on improving supply chain efficiency, reducing reliance on virgin raw materials, and strengthening the competitiveness of the Italian industry amid global changes.
Representatives of ALLATRA Italy attended the event and conducted a series of interviews with key conference speakers. Among them were Edo Ronchi, Chairman of the Foundation for Sustainable Development; Giorgio Zampetti, Director General of the environmental organization Legambiente; and Maria Alessandra Gallone, President of the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA).

The interviews addressed key issues concerning the transition to a circular economy, the role of microplastics and nanoplastics in current environmental and scientific discussions, the extent to which these issues are integrated into sustainable development policies, and the need to incorporate them into existing economic and environmental models. Discussions also focused on the interaction between the scientific community and the public, improving environmental transparency and awareness, the role of civil society in shaping the environmental agenda, and the measures required to ensure a sustainable future and protect future generations.
For her part, Maria Alessandra Gallone, President of the ISPRA, emphasized that microplastics represent one of today’s most pressing environmental challenges and require increased attention from the scientific community, public institutions, and society as a whole.
The Rome conference reaffirmed the strategic importance of the circular economy as a driver of industrial and environmental transformation tied to resource security, innovation, and sustainable development.
