ALLATRA Sweden Presented an Interdisciplinary Perspective on Nanoplastics and Human Health at Almedalen Week 2026

Volunteers of ALLATRA Sweden took part in Almedalen Week 2026, Sweden’s premier democratic forum for public policy, civic dialogue, and community engagement. The annual event takes place in Visby, on the island of Gotland.

Almedalen Week 2026 has been the largest in the forum's history. Over the course of five days, the event attracted about 120,000 attendees — the highest attendance since its inception. According to official statistics, the forum featured:

• 3,170 events;
• 1,804 organizing organizations;
• 6,627 registered speakers and participants.

Volunteers of ALLATRA Sweden, conducting presentation “Nanoplastics and Human Health” within the framework of the Alla Röster Ska Höras (“All Voices Must Be Heard”) initiative at Almedalen Week 2026 in Gotland, Sweden

As part of the forum’s official program, within the framework of the Alla Röster Ska Höras (“All Voices Must Be Heard”) initiative, volunteers of ALLATRA Sweden delivered a presentation titled “Nanoplastics and Human Health.” The presentation was based on the ALLATRA Global Research Center’s report, “Nanoplastics. A Systematic Risk Analysis for Human Health, Ecosystems, and the Environment.” Attendees were presented with an overview of current scientific data on nanoplastics, the pathways by which they enter the human body, and their potential health risks. 

The presentation highlighted that plastics barely degrade in the environment and instead gradually break down into increasingly smaller particles. Microplastics are defined as particles smaller than 5 millimeters, while nanoplastics are particles smaller than 1 micrometer, capable of crossing biological barriers. The speakers shared findings from recent studies showing that micro- and nanoplastics have been detected in water, air, soil, and food, as well as in various human tissues, including blood, lungs, placenta, reproductive tissues, and brain. 

The presentation also examined potential mechanisms through which micro- and nanoplastics may affect the human body, including inflammation, oxidative stress, disruption of cellular membranes, and adverse effects on mitochondria, the immune system, and cellular signaling.

Special attention was given to the potential risks to male and female reproductive health, early child development, and possible accumulation of plastic particles in brain tissues.

In conclusion, the speakers emphasized that further research of the problem should focus on the development of international standards for measuring and monitoring nanoplastics, the study of properties of nanoplastics and mechanisms of their interaction with living systems, as well as the search for ways to neutralize or reduce their harmful effects. The presenters also highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, public awareness, and constructive dialogue in addressing the growing global challenge.

The presentation generated great interest among attendees and resulted in a meaningful discussion. Participants emphasized the need to raise awareness of micro- and nanoplastics among both the general public and decision makers in order to foster practical solutions to this global problem.

Throughout the forum, ALLATRA Sweden representatives also engaged in meaningful discussions with scientists, experts, policymakers, representatives of civil society organizations, and other forum attendees, exchanging perspectives on pressing environmental challenges including the issue of micro- and nanoplastics.
