ALLATRA Paraguay at the Opening of the VII Summit of Indigenous Women of Abya Yala in Asunción
October 15 to 20, 2026, Asunción hosted the VII International Summit of Indigenous Women of Abya Yala. The ALLATRA Paraguay team joined the opening day of the gathering.
The name Abya Yala, used by many Indigenous peoples to refer to the Americas, comes from the language of the Guna people and reflects a vision of the land as a living territory.
Held under the motto “Ñandereko Arandu: Living from Wisdom,” a Guaraní expression that places Indigenous peoples’ own knowledge at the center, the summit brought together representatives from nine countries. Its aim was to strengthen dialogue, share experiences and build joint proposals to defend the collective rights of Indigenous peoples.
The opening day took place on October 15 at the Centro Cultural del Puerto in Asunción, with Indigenous delegations and representatives of public institutions in attendance. Over the course of the summit, participants discussed the defense of territories and water, the rights of Indigenous women, the preservation of ancestral knowledge and the involvement of younger generations. The program also included traditional ceremonies, cultural activities and spaces for exchange among participants.
The summit was organized by CONAMURI (National Coordinator of Rural and Indigenous Women Workers’ Organizations) together with the Governance Council of the Coordinadora Indígena Abya Yala. This seventh gathering continues a regional process that began in 2018 to strengthen cooperation among Indigenous peoples across the continent.
ALLATRA thanks the organizers of the Summit, CONAMURI and the Governance Council of the Coordinadora Indígena Abya Yala, for the invitation to the event, and all the delegations for the opportunity to share in this space of dialogue and encounter.
